Music in Commercials - Part 1

I was talking with a friend about this blog a while back and he had a cool idea about writing about indie music in commercials. I thought it would be fun, so I started thinking about music I could remember in commercials. After thinking of a couple I also went searching YouTube for more. Soon I realized there was actually a lot more bands I liked in mainstream commercials that I previously thought. I found it really entertaining so I continued to waste my Saturday afternoon commercial-hunting. Instead of creating my intended one post, I think I will make this a regular thing (maybe weekly). Feel free to post a comment about any particularly awe-inspiring commercials you come across.

CSS - Music is My Hot Hot Sex (iPod Touch)

CSS is not a band that I ever imagined being in a mainstream advertisement. This specific song even more than others. That being said, when you cut out some of the more less tasteful lyrics it fits perfectly in this ad. Super catchy!

The Go! Team - Huddle Formation (Honda Civic)

The Go! Team is great. Their super crazy, catchy sound makes an ad really stand out, especially when directed towards our current ADD generation. That fact is displayed clearly in this commercial.

Ben Lee - All in this together (Telus)

When I was looking for commercials to feature in this post I actually saw this on TV. I felt it was fate, or something like that, so I had to use it today. I guess I am indirectly advertising for all these brands that feature music I like. Telus is not a brand I would like promote. I use them for internet and it kept cutting out when I was watching these commercials on YouTube. Screw you Telus!

Here are some of the better places I found today whilst commercial-hunting

This is an odd forum where a guy asked for some indie music in commercials and got a lot more than he asked for.

These links are from a cool blog that did basically what I am doing here.

This site is dedicated to the music in advertisements. Cool site but it is full of ads and garbage.

  1. Yipee! You’re using my idea! I have a thought about what you could do from now on if you are worried about showing these commercials. Have a snippet of the song you’re talking about and a link to the actual commercial. Good stuff so far.

Here’s some bands for next time too:

    Architecture in Helsinki
    Chicks on Speed
    Digitalism

  2. I like the idea of having the actual commercial embedded in the page. Frankly, I wouldn’t want to open YouTube in another page to see it. You don’t like it this way?

Which Architecture in Helsinki commercial were you talking about? I looked for one and only came up with one that wasn’t very good and barely sounded like them.
